What Can You Learn from a Thermometer on a Rising Balloon?
ES1702  Data from a Weather Balloon

Data from National Weather Service
Example of data collected from a National Weather Service sounding balloon.

This data table shows a subsample of radiosonde data collected during a balloon flight.

PRES = Air Pressure
HGHT = Height above ground
TEMP = Temperature
DWPT = Dew Point
RELH = Relative Humidity

Tables like this show all the information collected by the radiosonde, but they don't make it very easy to recognize the pattern of temperature versus height. To make changes in temperature patterns stand out, a graph of temperature versus height (altitude) is constructed from the data.
