How Does Stream Flow Change over Time?
ES1301  Controls on Discharge: Graphs II

The two graphs below show discharge and temperature for the Rio Grande River, near Taos, New Mexico. This part of the Rio Grande is in northern New Mexico, near the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, which typically receive abundant snowfall between October and May.

Both graphs show short-term changes and longer-term changes. Concentrate on the long-term changes, in particular the month-to-month changes between December, 1997 and May, 1998. Compare the peaks in discharge with the variation in temperature.

Red line in temperature plot shows general trend of mean temperature.

8. What do you notice about the timing of the peaks of discharge and temperature variation starting in March? What do you conclude from this relationship? What other data might you need to confirm your hypothesis?
