Is It Safe to Live Near a Volcano?
ES0907  Historical Mudflows from Mount Rainier

This map shows volcanic mudflow deposits from Mount Rainier for the past 5600 years. Several towns and cities have been built directly on or near these mudflows.

Consider the zones of destruction you identified around Mount St. Helens—similar zones of destruction would likely form in the vicinity of Mount Rainier if it erupted. Also recall that the extent of actual destruction at Mount St. Helens was much larger than the area covered by historical mudflows.
