How Fast Do Gases from Volcanic Eruptions Travel?
ES0906  Weather Satellite Image

This image shows the eruption as viewed by a weather satellite. Volcanic ash in the upper atmosphere appears dark gray in the image.

Look for the dark circular feature. It is a plume of volcanic ash rising from Mount Pinatubo early on June 15, 1991. The yellow spot southeast of the volcano marks the location of Manila, capital city of the Philippines and home to over 10 million people.
