Cynthia Voigt knows her young-adult audience well. Perhaps that is because
she spent so many years with young people, both as a high school English
teacher and as a mother of two. Born in Boston, Voigt graduated from Smith
College in 1963 and went on to teach in Glen Burnie and Annapolis, Maryland.
With the 1981 publication of Homecoming, Voigt achieved her long delayed
ambition of becoming a writer. Since then she has published six more novels about
the family featured in Homecoming. Dicey's Song won the Newbery Medal
in 1983.
