Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and novelist James D. Houston met as students at San Jose State
College and married in 1957. In 1973, they published Farewell to Manzanar, the story
of Jeanne's family's experiences in an internment camp for Japanese Americans during World
War II. Jeanne has said that it took her 25 years to be able to talk about what happened.
To her, writing was "a way of coming to terms with the impact these years have had on my
life." The Houstons also collaborated on the screenplay for an award-winning film based
on the book.
