Born in Trinidad, Rosa Guy immigrated to the United States in the 1930s.
After the death of her parents, young Rosa and her sister lived in a succession
of institutions and foster homes. She quit school at the age of 14 and took a job
in a factory to help support her sister. Guy later attended New York University,
where she studied writing and theater. A recurring theme in many of her works is
the resposibility of family members and friends to love and care for one another.
Rosa Guy received an American Library Association Notable Book Award for The Friends.
