Of the land that she wrote about with such passion and truth, Cather said, "It has been the happiness and
the curse of my life." Few other writers have portrayed the American West so honestly and intensely. Born
in Virginia, Willa Cather and her family moved to a frontier town in Nebraska when she was nine, where she
grew up among immigrants. After graduating from college, Cather moved east and worked as a newspaper
reporter, English teacher, and magazine editor before writing full time. My Antonia recalls
characters Cather remembered from her childhood.
