Projects

Choose one or more of the projects below to make your own connections to the environment. Each project can be completed by an individual student or by a small group.

Multimedia Presentation
Use images from the Internet and the article "New Kinds of Cars" to create a multimedia presentation about environmentally friendly cars. Find images of cars that don't rely solely on internal combustion engines. Include a caption describing each technology and a table showing the advantages and disadvantages of each technology. You may want to include the following in your descriptions:

  • the history of each technology
  • specifications and special features of each car

Documentary Film Script
Write a script for a documentary on an animal habitat that is threatened by industry, farming, or other human activity. You can start your research using information from the article "Conserving for the Future." Your film script should address the following:

  • What human activities are threatening this habitat? How?
  • What would be the likely impact, including cultural and environmental affects, if this species were to become extinct?
  • What efforts are underway to combat destruction of this habitat? What types of barriers stand in the way?

Include narration and descriptions of locations, sound, and images in your script.

Short Essay
Read the article "Protecting Our History" and use the Web sites listed on the "Links" page to learn about efforts to protect ancient burial grounds, prehistoric monuments, and archaeological sites. Then write a short essay explaining what principles should be applied in deciding how to treat these sites and the relics, artifacts, and human remains that are found there. Your writing should express a strong opinion. Take a clear position and support that position with references to details about specific prehistoric sites.

Oral Presentation
Read the article "Conserving for the Future" and use the Web sites listed on the "Links" page to learn about the politics of rain forest preservation. Then prepare an oral presentation in which you propose a set of U.S. policies to combat the destruction of rain forests in the U.S. and Latin America. Include the following in your presentation:

  • Specific policies the United States government should adopt
  • A well-reasoned explanation for each policy
  • Data showing the dangers posed by destruction of rain forests
