Choose one or more of the projects below to make your own connections to the Parthenon.
Each project can be completed by an individual student or by a small group.
Produce a multimedia presentation of photographs of the Parthenon or depictions of the
statues and sculptures once contained in the Parthenon. Use the presentation to explain
how and when the Parthenon's many art masterpieces were removed and where (if known)
these objects now reside.
- You may include images from the articles "Athena and Other Statues" and "Relief Sculptures."
- Use "Links" to find additional information on the Internet.
- Remember to cite your sources for all images.
Review the information in the article "Classical Greece." Then download or draw a map of the
Acropolis and indicate the major structures and statues that Pericles ordered built or restored.
Indicate on the map the dates on which each structure or statue was created. Supply other important
details in the margins of the page.
- Use "Links" to find additional information on the Internet.
- Option: use multimedia software to convert your outline map to an interactive map so you can add links to useful Web sites and images.
Read the article "Building with Columns" and consider the engineering feats the Athenians achieved in
the construction of the Parthenon and other stone structures. Write a short essay about those engineering feats,
comparing them with earlier types of construction in Athens.
- Mention the engineering innovations listed in the article.
- Use "Links" to find additional information on the Internet.
Use the information in the article "Relief Sculptures" to deliver an oral presentation on the different
types and locations of relief sculptures throughout the Parthenon. Explain where the sculptures were located,
who designed and created them, and the scenes the sculptures depicted. You may also wish to include the following
in your presentation:
- drawings or photographs of the Parthenon that show the locations of the sculptures
- photographs of art works from the Parthenon located at the British Museum
- artists' renderings of the Parthenon at the time of its completion
