Inspiration In Kent, Ohio, where Cynthia Rylant lives, a strange small man sometimes brings flowers in Mason jars to waitresses at a little diner. That man became the inspiration for Ernie. Beside the diner is a hardware store. "That's where my imagination found Dolores," said Rylant, who claims that she enjoys taking "people who don't get any attention in the world and making them really valuable in my fictionmaking them absolutely shine with their beauty."
Formative Years Rylant wrote her first book, When I Was Young in the Mountains, in one night. Nevertheless, she says, "It took me about seven years to feel like a writer." Rylant has achieved success in many forms of writing: picture books for children, novels for young adults, short stories, and poetry. Her book Missing May was awarded the Newbery Medal in 1992.
