Precious Gift Because Gary Paulsen's father was an army officer, his family moved frequently when he was a boy. "School was a nightmare because I was unbelievably shy, and terrible at sports," he recalls. One cold winter night when he was living in a small town in northern Minnesota, Paulsen went into a library to get warm. The librarian offered him a library card and the chance to take out books. Paulsen read the books he took out "as though I had been dying of thirst and the librarian had handed me a five gallon bucket of water."
Outdoor Adventures Besides being a writer, Paulsen has been, among other things, a soldier, a trapper, and a rancher. His experiences in the outdoors have been the inspiration for more than forty books, among them the Newbery Honor Books Dogsong, Hatchet, and The Winter Room.
