"Up to the very end we [Wilhelm and myself] worked in two rooms next to
each other, always under one roof." [Jakob Grimm]
Reluctant Lawyers Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm were born in Hanau, Germany and trained to be lawyers. Their widowed mother struggled to pay for their education. However, the brothers were much more interested in collecting local folk tales than they were in practicing law.
The Grimm Legacy Their first book Kinder-und Hausmarchen (Nursery and Household Tales) was published in 1812. The book was a scholarly collection of household tales, intended for adult readers but young people read it anyway. Later editions of the book were made with young people in mind. Illustrations were added, and some of the grisly tales were removed. Today, Grimm Fairy Tales appear in more than 70 languages. The stories are known and loved throughout the world.
