The Language of Literature
 Overview

Unit 1 Part Openers

Part 1: Knowing Who You Are

Getting to know who you are is part of growing up and developing as an individual. Throughout history, people have regarded knowing who you are as the first step in learning about life. Literature can help you learn about both life and yourself. It provides the freedom to imagine yourself in different places or times. Often you recognize your own ideas and habits in a certain character and, therefore, can see yourself more clearly. As you read these selections, judge how much you know about yourself.

Part 2: Moments of Discovery

Not knowing what to expect can make new experiences frightening. At the same time, they are opportunities for discovery. The characters in Part 2 make discoveries about themselves, others, and the world around them.
