Tips
In this section, you will select the words to fill in the blanks within sentences. This section tests your vocabulary skills and your understanding of complicated sentences. Some questions will ask you to fill in one blank, and others will ask you to select the best words for two blanks.
Things To Remember
- Always read the entire sentence (including the blanks) to determine its overall meaning. It is important that you understand the general idea of the sentence before you attempt to fill in the blank(s).
- Introductory and transitional words will help you understand how the parts of the sentence function. Pay close attention to words like although, but, however, and yet.
- Decide what kind of word(s) should fill in the blank(s) before you look at the choices. Then see if there is a choice that matches your suggestion.
- For some of the two-blank questions, you can eliminate certain choices on the basis of one blank. If one of the words or phrases doesn't fit the context of the sentence, then you can automatically eliminate that choice.
- Be sure to select the best answer. Two or more of the choices may complete the sentence in an appropriate way; however, your challenge is to select the best answer. Always look at all the choices before you choose your answer.
