Identifying Sentence Errors

Read through the tips and sample question below. When you are ready, Start the test.

Tips

In this section, you will read sentences that contain mistakes. In each sentence, certain words or phrases will be underlined and lettered. Your challenge will be to determine if the sentence contains an error, and if so, to identify it. If the sentence is correct, then you should select choice E, "No error."

Things To Remember

  • In these questions, apply the rules of standard written English. Remember that everyday speech and casual conversations often do not follow the rules of standard written English.
  • Be aware of pronoun agreement errors. A singular noun always requires a singular pronoun. A plural noun always requires a plural pronoun.
  • Each sentence will contain either one error or no error at all. You will not encounter a sentence that contains two or more errors.
  • Remember that your task is to identify the error (if there is one). If a sentence sounds incorrect to you, then quickly decide how it should be revised. Mentally "fixing" a sentence can help you focus in on the error.
  • Remember that some sentences will be correct. Most of the sentences will contain one error, but some of the sentences will be written correctly. Mark choice E for sentences that contain no errors.

Directions and Sample Question

The following sentences test your ability to recognize grammar and usage errors. Each sentence contains either a single error or no error at all. No sentence contains more than one error. The error, if there is one, is underlined and lettered. If the sentence contains an error, select the one underlined part that must be changed to make the sentence correct. If the sentence is correct, select choice E. In choosing answers, follow the requirements of standard written English.
