In how many words is the prefix ex followed by the letter p? _____
2. Is the prefix ex followed by the letter s in any of the words? _____
3. When the prefix and root are joined, is the letter x doubled in any of the words? _____

Lesson Generalization

The prefix ex means "out" or "beyond." It is added directly to roots beginning with the letters t or p. The letter x is never doubled.

No commonly used words begin with the letters exs. The letter x itself makes the sound of s or z.

Mnemonic device: X marks the spot between the prefix and root. Don't add any ex-tra letters!
