Return to book index Unidad 1 : Estados Unidos: Mi mundo

Step 1:
First you need to do a little research to find out which areas in the United States have the largest Latino populations, and how large these populations are. You have already learned from your textbook that three major Spanish-speaking communities in the U.S. are Puerto Ricans, Mexicans and Cubans. Use the websites related to Latinos in the U.S. to fill in the following charts with information about each group and the U.S, or create your own organizers. Then write a short summary of your findings, using sentences such as the following.

Number in U.S.

los puertorriqueños

los cubano-americanos

Step 2:
Now you will research U.S. Latinos of different origins and choose one person from each group as a possible person for your profile. These people can be celebrities or people who are not as well known. The only criterion is that they be an outstanding member of their community for one reason or another. Use the websites related to Latinos in the community to make your selections and write down one additional piece of information for each person (birthday, age, interest, family, etc.) In some cases, you may need to do a search on the person ( in order to find out his or her nationality and some additional information. Organize your information in a table like the following, or create your own organizer. Then write two short Spanish sentences about each person, saying what their nationality is and including the other information you researched.

Other information: edad, cumpleaños, intereses, familia, profesión, etc.

Step 3:
Pick one of the people you identified in Step 2, and write a short paragraph in Spanish that describes him or her. Include his or her nationality, age, birthdate, city or state, and what he or she is famous for. Try to include as much information as you can in order to make you subject as interesting as possible. Remember, you want to convince your supervisor to do a program about this person!
