  • Compaction forces water out of the sediments to form lignite, a soft, brown coal.

  • Further compression and aging turn lignite into bituminous coal, a soft, black coal.

  • Heat and pressure metamorphose bituminous coal to anthracite, a hard coal that is almost pure carbon.
