of the most dramatic changes caused by the eruption
resulted from lahars, mudflows of volcanic materials.
Following heavy rains delivered by tropical cyclones,
these rivers of mud and gravel raced down streams
and rivers on the mountain, often burying everything
in their path under huge volumes of debris.

Make your own mini-lahar!
If you have a sample of volcanic ash available,
put a couple of spoonfuls into a disposable cup
with about one quarter cup of water, then stir.
You can substitute flour or corn starch if you
dont have volcanic ash. Imagine a flood
of this messy substance flowing down a mountain!
