What Does the Spectrum of a Star Tell Us about Its Temperature?

In this investigation, you'll examine spectral patterns to categorize stars into groups. Twelve simulated absorption spectra appear on the left. Examine patterns in the location and width of the dark absorption lines and brightness of each color.

  !   Click and drag each spectrum onto the stage area. Move the spectra around to compare them to one another. Cluster the spectra into groups with other similar spectra. Make as many groups as you need, then answer question number 2 below.
 

 
   

Consider which characteristics of the spectra you use to form your groups. You can assign each group a name if it helps you focus on their similarities.
