People often mistakenly apply their
knowledge of Earth's elliptical orbit to explain the
change of seasons. Rather, Earth's seasons are caused
by the tilt of Earth's axis, which causes it to point
toward or away from the sun at opposite times of the
year. In fact, during winter in the northern hemisphere,
Earth actually receives about 7% more energy from the
sun than it receives during the northern hemisphere's
summer.
