When Is Mud Dangerous?
ES1204  A Muddy Mess

L. Dahlman
When you think of mud, you might only consider the mess that it makes. But mud can be dangerous, too.

Mudflows, also called debris flows or mudslides, are mixtures of water-saturated debris flowing downhill under the force of gravity.

The appearance of mudflows ranges from muddy-looking water to thick, rocky mud that flows like wet concrete. When they flow downhill gathering speed and sediments, mudflows can pick up and carry all kinds of debris, including boulders, trees, cars, and buildings.
