Environmental conditions for rocks can be separated
into two broad categories: rocks near the surface experience
conditions of relatively low temperature and pressure,
while rocks deep underground experience conditions of
relatively high temperature and pressure.
To help you visualize these two conditions, consider
trying to mold two different lumps of clay, one that
has been stored in a freezer and one at room temperature.
Which of the two lumps would be more likely to respond
with brittle deformation? Which one would deform in
a ductile manner?
Consider the two types of deformation and the three
types of stress. What structures do you think are likely
to result from the six combinations?
an environmental condition for rocks, then select a
type of stress to apply. Examine the animations and
resulting structures for each combination.
