The eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980 caused 57 deaths and millions of dollars in damages. This volcano is just one peak in a chain of volcanoes known as the Cascades. Subduction and melting of the Juan de Fuca Plate beneath the North American Plate supplies magma to these volcanoes.
