Is It Safe to Live Near a Volcano?
ES0907  Planning for Evacuation

This map shows topography and major streams and rivers in the area around the volcano. Years before the volcano started rumbling, geologists had produced a map showing areas that have been covered by ash and mudflows from Mount St. Helens over the past 4000 years. Evacuation planners consulted this map to help them decide which areas around the volcano were dangerous.

!   Click "Show volcanic deposits" below to see the areas that were affected by past eruptions. Examine how the pattern of volcanic deposits is related to stream locations.
