This image shows the eruption as viewed by a weather
satellite. Volcanic ash in the upper atmosphere appears
dark gray in the image.
Look for the dark circular feature. It is a plume of
volcanic ash rising from Mount Pinatubo early on June
15, 1991. The yellow spot southeast of the volcano marks
the location of Manila, capital city of the Philippines
and home to over 10 million people.
