Mount Pinatubo, a volcano in the Philippines, erupted explosively in June of 1991. Though it had been dormant for over 500 years, it produced one of the most convulsive volcanic eruptions of the twentieth century. Tons of ash and volcanic gases were expelled into the atmosphere.
