Writing About History: Business Writing

Assignment: Imagine that you write for a magazine during the Civil War era. Your assignment is to write a business letter to your managing editor about a story you would like to cover.

  • Review the chapters in Unit 5. Note the events, people, and developments that interest you. Jot down details about what makes each one newsworthy.
  • Review your notes and decide which event, person, or development you think should be included in your magazine.
  • Use the Internet or the library to find more information about your topic. Use available databases and electronic encyclopedias with links to the World Wide Web for information. Visit the Research Links for Creating America at ClassZone.com.
  • While doing your research be sure to look for information that you can use to help explain to your editor why the story you have chosen is an important one to cover.
