Deutsches Schulsystem

Context

In Kapitel 11, you learned about the German school system and vocabulary for school subjects. The German school system provided a model for the American school system — evident in the word Kindergarten, or "children garden." Although Germany provided a model and many of the educational theories for the American system of education, there are many differences between the two systems today. What do you think some of the differences are?

Exploration

TAK, or Transatlantisches Klassenzimmer, is an organization that provides a forum for German and American students to discuss the differences between the two school systems. To learn more about how the two systems differ, click on the site below. As you explore, keep the following questions in mind:

  • Who has primary responsibility for running the educational system in Germany?
  • Who is responsible for paying most of the costs of education?
  • What are some of the challenges German students face?
  • What is the "dual system"? Why has it arisen?
  • What are some of the main differences between the school system in Germany and the system in the United States? Cite at least one example.

Application

After you have finished reading about the German school system, review your notes. In a small group of 3-4 students discuss how the school systems in Germany and the United States differ. Give at least three major differences. What are the merits of each system? What are the drawbacks? List the advantages and disadvantages on the chalkboard or make a poster. Which system do you think better enables students to achieve their goals in life?
