Context

In Kapitel 10 you learned more school-related vocabulary. You also learned more about Michael Händel and a problem he encountered at school. As German society changes, German students have become more politically involved to solve the problems they encounter. How do you think students can confront problems in their schools?

The Schüler-Union is a student-run organization devoted to addressing the concerns and needs of students. To learn more about their program, visit the site below. As you read more about the Schüler-Union, keep the following questions in mind:

Who is involved with the Schüler-Union? How did they become involved with the organization?
What are the concerns of the Schüler-Union?
Which concerns might be similar in schools in the United States?
How do the members of the Schüler-Union propose to address those concerns?
Based on the concerns the students of the Schüler-Union raise, what issues do you think are important to German students? Give an example to support your answer.

Application

After exploring the site, look at your notes. What concerns did the Schüler-Union articulate? What suggestions for solving their problems did the students suggest? With a partner, create a chart showing both the problems and the solutions that are mentioned on the Web site. Are the solutions realistic? Display your chart and discuss whether you think the Schüler-Union will be successful dealing with one of the problems they mention. You might also discuss how you would address the same problem in your school.
