Der Schulalltag

Context

In Kapitel 10 you learned more school-related vocabulary that will help you discuss daily student life. You also learned more about a typical German school day and some of the problems that German students face. Do students at your school face similar problems? How does a normal day in a German school compare to a normal day at your school? Would it be more difficult for a German student to adjust to your schedule, or for you to adjust to a German schedule?

Exploration

Explore the following website to get students' views on school life from both sides of the Atlantic. As you read, keep a pen and paper nearby to jot down notes to the questions below.

  • How do German students usually get to school?
  • What courses are required for students of the Hameln Gymnasium? Are similar courses required at your school?
  • When do most German students do their homework?
  • How long is the average German school day? Do students have any free time during the day?
  • What do German students like to do after school? What types of co-curricular activities are offered to students in Hameln? How do students like to spend their free time?
  • Students in the Gymnasium can participate in which sports? When do the clubs meet and how often?

Application

In German, write a letter or email to students living in Germany who want to know what a typical day at your school is like. Describe the students and teachers, how you usually get to school, which courses are available, and the amount of homework you have. How long is the school day? Are there any organizations or clubs? What do students do outside of class? Do you know anything about the history of your school? If so, tell the German students about it.
